Summer Reading - 2009

Summer Reading - 2009

The purpose of summer reading at Maryvale Middle School is to help promote a reading habit in our students.  It is clear from the research that students who have developed an active reading habit do better on standardized tests including NYS content assessments.  It is also clear that students who learn to enjoy reading and do it on a regular basis are better prepared for the academic tasks they face day-to-day in school.

Students who are entering the 6th grade at Maryvale Middle School are required to read ONE summer reading book from a list of five books.

Students who are entering the 7th and 8th grade must read TWO total books.  One required book for English/Language Arts and One required book for Social Studies.  Some grade levels will require you to complete tasks that you will hand into your teacher during the first weeks of school.

Click on the links below to see the books assigned and view a detailed explanation about each book.
