The school counselor is a certified professional educator who assists students, teachers, parents and administrators. Three generally recognized helping processes used by the counselor are counseling, consulting and coordination.
- Counseling is a complex helping process in which the counselor establishes a trusting and confidential working relationship. The focus is on problem-solving, decision-making and discovering personal meaning related to learning and development.
- Consultation is a cooperative process in which the counselor-consultant assists others to think through problems and to develop skills that make them more effective in working with students.
- Coordination is a leadership process in which the counselor helps organize and manage a school’s counseling program and related services.

Roles of the School Psychologist
The school psychologist provides a wide variety of services to the school. The school psychologist has expertise in interpersonal interactions, educational theory and individual psychology which compliments the administrative, curricular, health and teaching expertise of other team members to provide a complete educational environment.
Consultation
- Assessment consultant to CST (Child Study Team)
- Classroom management - behavior modification
- Developing instructional programs for students.(preventative and advocate)
- Parental consultant and advocate for teachers and administrators
Counseling
- On an individual or group basis for any student
- Crisis intervention

SCHOOL SOCIAL WORKER

Many students do not achieve academic success due to social, emotional, and behavioral issues that affect school performance: School social workers help students become resilient successful learners by addressing these barriers to learning through early identification, prevention, intervention, counseling, and support.
School Social Workers:
- actively address barriers within the child, home, school, and community that interfere with student achievement.
- serve as catalysts to bring people together and to create an environment that is conducive to effective problem solving and learning.
- practice includes: assessment, crisis intervention, home visits, conflict resolution, individual and group counseling, consultation, program development, and coordination of school and community services.
What School Social Work Services Can Do:
Help students to:
- cope in times of crisis
- gain personal and social competencies
- develop conflict resolution skills, develop social interaction skills, decision making
Support parents to:
- effectively participate in their child's education
- understand their child's developmental and educational needs
- access school and community resources
- strengthen parenting skills
- access mental health services
Assist educators to:
- discover new resources
- understand family, cultural and community factors affecting students
- meet educational outcomes for students of diverse backgrounds
Working with administrators to:
- implement effective prevention programs and policies which address: school attendance, violence and bully prevention and school safety
- ensure compliance with special education laws
Link schools & communities to:
- coordinate the delivery of educational and mental health services
- develop resources to adequately meet the needs of students and families
